Best domain registrars

I have quite a few domains and have been using many registrars over the years.

For .co.uk I recommend http://www.ukreg.com. They are one of the cheapest (123-reg has a poor interface and don’t take paypal).

For .com ($8.88 http://www.namecheap.com ($8.88 you can get $1 off with a coupon or http://www.godaddy.com  (about the same or $6.95 +22cent ican fee with a coupon).  Renewals can be a pain in the ass as godaddy or namecheap don’t tend to give discounts. One trick I have used is to transfer domains between the two at a discounted rate and register the domain for a long period of time at the discounted rate. For example I transfereed a domain from namecheap (8.88 renewal fee) to godaddy (6.95 transfer fee) and registered the domain for 5 years saving me about $5.

For .info I use godaddy but there $10.22 renewal fee is a rip off. I am looking for a cheap renewal fee for .infos if anyone has any suggestions, please comment.

For .net www.moniker.com $5.49 an average interface but the 5.49 renewal and registration fee is the best about and they have a good reputation.

Go to domainnamecoupons.com or dncoupons.com to get discount vouchers for domains.

Domain name addiction

It has become apparent that I have a problem with registering too many domains, I just can’t stop registering them. I can go without registering domains for a few weeks and then I will have an idea for a website, I go check if the domain is available if it is I register it, if it isn’t then I think of another, check it and register it.

At this point I should really stop but I just can’t. What will usually happen is I get about 10 new ideas for domains and just keep registering them. This happens until I have got about 10-20 domains.

The problem with this method is that the recurring fees for undeveloped domains can wipe out profits. The way I am going to approach this problem is to not register any domains for the next 2 months and try to develop or sell 50% of my registered domains (I have a few hundred at least).

Transferring domains away from register fly

If like me registerfly have screwed you e.g. stealing your money and not renewing your domain its time to transfer your domains away.

I decided to go for godaddy (this offer is on there homepage near the top) as they have a special offer which is $6 for a transfer and they add another year onto the domain. So for example if you have a domain that is due to expire in 9/26/06 and you transfer it to godaddy then it will expire in 9/26/07.

To transfer your domain from registerfly to any registrar you need your domain unlocked, your domain authorization code (also known as epp code) and privacy protection (also known as protect fly or whoisguard) disabled and the correct email address on the domain record.

1. Firstly login to the registerfly website
2. Click the manage domains button on the main menu
3. Select your domain name by clicking (the domain name is blue underlined)

To unlock the domain
4. A new page will load, with the domain details on. Check the domain status if it says unlocked you should be ok (if the whois says locked try locking then unlocking). If it says locked then click the locked link.
